Go Fishing: Shore Fishing, Deep Sea, Key West Fishing Charters
From the sport fishing capital of the world on Islamorada to numerous hidden gems in Key West, The Keys are home to abundant sources of fish and a variety of species. No matter the season, there’s always fish, from marlin and swordfish to dolphinfish and mutton snapper, and much more. For shore fishing, try Fort Zachary Taylor’s rock jetty, where you’ll find snapper, amberjack, and tarpon. For deep sea fishing in the Florida Straits (Ernest Hemingway’s preferred fishing spot for the sheer size of the fish!), check out the island’s fishing charters, of which there are many.
Even if you’re just planning to catch and release, you will need a fishing license. Luckily, they’re easy to purchase through the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Visit Dry Tortugas National Park
Dry Tortugas National Park is made up of seven small islands some 70 miles west of Key West, accessible only by sea or air. Among seafarers, it’s noted for its rough reef that has brought down many ships - some filled with treasure, which you can check out at the Key West Shipwreck Museum. The park is a birder’s paradise, a history buff’s treat, and a great place to snorkel. Visit Dry Tortugas via daily ferry from Key Bight in Key West. The ride out is just over two hours, and visitors typically spend four hours on Garden Key, checking out Fort Jefferson and enjoying snorkeling. It’s a great day trip for the whole family, with views you can’t see anywhere else.
